Why Berlin is the Solo Capital of Europe

Berlin was practically designed for solo travellers. It's cheap (your money stretches further here than almost anywhere in Western Europe), incredibly safe, and has a culture that celebrates independence. Eating alone, drinking alone, going to a gallery alone — none of this is weird in Berlin. In fact, many locals prefer it. There's a German word for it: Alleingang — going it alone, on your own terms.

Where to Stay

Berlin's hostel scene is the best in Europe. These aren't grungy backpacker dorms — they're social hubs:

  • PLUS Berlin (Warschauer Straße, Friedrichshain) — pool, sauna, rooftop bar. Dorms from €18. The common areas are huge and the location puts you in Berlin's liveliest area. This is where you'll meet people within your first hour
  • Circus Hostel (Rosenthaler Platz, Mitte) — Berlin's most famous hostel. Microbrewery in the basement, apartments upstairs if you want privacy (from €65). They organise nightly events. Dorms from €22
  • If you want alone time: 25hours Hotel Bikini Berlin overlooks the zoo (seriously) — doubles from €95 on off-peak nights. The rooftop Monkey Bar is a great solo spot

The Solo Day

Berlin is a city of neighbourhoods. Pick one per day and explore at your own pace:

Perfect solo morning: Walk to Bonanza Coffee (Oderberger Straße 35, Prenzlauer Berg) — Berlin's best roastery. Order a filter coffee (€3.50), sit by the window, and plan your day. Nobody will rush you. Berlin doesn't rush.

Perfect solo afternoon: Rent a bike (€12/day from Donkey Republic, app-based) and cycle along the Spree River from Museum Island through to Treptower Park. Lock up at the Soviet War Memorial — a staggeringly powerful monument in a peaceful park. Sit on the Spree bank and watch the barges pass.

Perfect solo evening: A Spätis (corner shop) beer on the canal bank in Kreuzberg (€1.50). Then dinner at Markthalle Neun on a Street Food Thursday — communal tables, 40 food stalls, solo-friendly by design. Budget €12-15.

Meeting People (When You Want To)

  • Alternative Berlin walking tour: Free (tip-based). Covers street art, squats, and Berlin's counterculture. 3 hours, great group, and the guides know everyone
  • Mauerpark Sundays: The flea market + karaoke amphitheatre is the most social place in Berlin. Everyone talks to everyone. Grab a beer and sit in the Bearpit
  • Techno (if you're into it): Berlin's clubs are actually easier solo than in groups. Tresor, ://about blank, Sisyphos (an entire weekend odyssey). The etiquette: go alone, dress dark, don't take photos, talk to people on the smoking terrace. Berghain is the famous one, but the door is ruthless — don't make it your only plan
  • Language exchanges: Babel Café (weekly at various venues) — multilingual conversation events. Perfect for meeting locals and other travellers

Safety

Berlin is one of Europe's safest cities. Violent crime is extremely rare in areas tourists visit. The main risk is bike theft (always lock both wheels) and pickpocketing on the U-Bahn (keep bags closed). Walking alone at night in Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg, Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg feels completely safe. Neukölln has a grittier edge but is still generally fine.

For women: Berlin is an excellent solo destination. The city has a strong feminist culture, and catcalling is notably less common than in southern European cities. Trust the usual city instincts.

Budget (Solo, 4 Nights)

  • Flights: £20-45 return
  • Hostel: €72-88 (4 nights)
  • Food: €60-80 (döner lunches, one nice dinner, market food)
  • Transport: €35 (4x day tickets)
  • Attractions: €20-40 (many free)
  • Total: £180-280 per person

Berlin might be the only major European city where you can have an incredible 4-night trip for under £200. The city is stupidly good value.
