Why April is THE Month for DC
Washington DC in April is genuinely special. The cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin — 3,000+ trees gifted by Japan in 1912 — create one of the most photographed scenes in America. Add perfect weather (15-22°C), the fact that almost every museum is completely free, and you've got one of the best city trips in the world.
Cherry Blossom Timing
The National Cherry Blossom Festival runs from late March to mid-April 2026. Peak bloom — when 70% of the Tidal Basin trees are open — typically falls between March 28 and April 5, but it shifts yearly with weather.
How to check: The National Park Service updates their Bloom Watch page daily from early March. Plan your Tidal Basin visit for peak bloom + 2-3 days (petals start falling, which is equally beautiful).
Best viewing spots:
- Tidal Basin (west side): The iconic view with the Jefferson Memorial. Arrive by 7am on weekends — by 9am it's shoulder-to-shoulder
- East Potomac Park: Less crowded, more varieties, including weeping cherries that bloom slightly later. Brilliant for cycling
- Dumbarton Oaks (Georgetown): A hidden gem — beautiful cherry trees in a formal garden setting. Entrance $10
- Kenwood neighbourhood (Bethesda, MD): The local secret. Residential streets absolutely covered in cherry blossoms with zero crowds. 20 minutes by Metro (Red Line to Bethesda)
The Smithsonian: The World's Best Free Day Out
Every single Smithsonian museum is free. There are 21 of them. Here are the unmissable ones:
- National Air and Space Museum: The Wright Flyer, Apollo 11 command module, and the SR-71 Blackbird. Recently renovated and better than ever. Allow 3 hours
- National Museum of Natural History: The Hope Diamond, the Ocean Hall, and a live butterfly pavilion. The dinosaur hall is extraordinary
- National Gallery of Art: Technically not Smithsonian but also free. Da Vinci, Vermeer, Monet, the only da Vinci painting in the Americas. The sculpture garden outside is perfect in April
- National Museum of African American History: The most powerful museum in DC. Book timed tickets online — they release them a month ahead and sell out instantly. This is non-negotiable
- National Museum of American History: The original Star-Spangled Banner, Dorothy's ruby slippers, the Greensboro lunch counter. More fun than you'd expect
Beyond the Mall
- Georgetown: DC's oldest neighbourhood. Walk along M Street and Wisconsin Avenue for boutiques, then down to the C&O Canal towpath. Lunch at Martin's Tavern (since 1933) — JFK proposed to Jackie in booth 3. A burger and beer runs $22
- Adams Morgan: DC's most diverse neighbourhood. The Diner on 18th Street does the best brunch (open 24/7 weekends). Walk to the Meridian Hill/Malcolm X Park drum circle on Sunday afternoons — free and absolutely joyful
- U Street Corridor: The historic "Black Broadway." Ben's Chili Bowl (since 1958, Obama's favourite) — a half-smoke with chili is $7.50 and essential DC eating. Busboys and Poets for coffee and people-watching
- Alexandria, VA: 20 minutes by Metro. A gorgeous 18th-century port town. Walk King Street to the waterfront, stop at Stomping Ground for brunch
The Monuments at Night
The single best thing to do in DC is walk the monuments after dark — they're lit up, open 24/7, and virtually empty after 9pm.
- Lincoln Memorial → WWII Memorial → Washington Monument → Capitol: This 2-mile walk along the Mall is unforgettable at night. The reflecting pool with the Washington Monument glowing behind it is pure cinema
- FDR Memorial: Overlooked by most tourists. A series of outdoor rooms with waterfalls and quotes carved in granite. Incredibly atmospheric at night
- MLK Memorial: The 30-foot statue emerging from stone. Visit at night when the crowds are gone and you can read the inscription wall in quiet
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Search flights to Washington DC — Dulles (IAD) and Reagan National (DCA) are the main airports. DCA is by far more convenient (Metro directly into the city)
- Metro: DC's Metro is clean and easy. A SmarTrip card costs $2 + fares ($2-6 per ride depending on distance/time). Buy at any station
- Accommodation: April is peak season. Budget $150-250/night for central hotels. Staying in Arlington, VA (one Metro stop across the river) saves 30-40%
- Budget tip: The museums are free. The monuments are free. Many of the best concerts at the Kennedy Center (Millennium Stage, 6pm daily) are free. DC can be surprisingly affordable if you focus on what makes it special
April Weather
Expect 15-22°C daytime, dropping to 7-10°C at night. Pack layers — mornings at the Tidal Basin are chilly. April averages 8 rainy days, so bring a light waterproof. By late April, it's reliably warm enough for outdoor dining.
