The Copenhagen Food Paradox

Copenhagen is simultaneously one of the world's best food cities and one of the most expensive. Noma put Nordic cuisine on the global map (and even after closing its permanent restaurant in 2024, its alumni run half the restaurants in the city). But a casual dinner can easily hit 400-500 DKK (£45-55) per person.

The trick: eat like Copenhageners. Markets, bakeries, street food and lunch deals are where the value lives.

The Essential Spots

Torvehallerne Market

Two glass halls near Nørreport station — Copenhagen's food epicentre.

  • Hallernes Smørrebrød: The best open-faced sandwiches in the market. Classic herring on rugbrød (rye bread) — 75 DKK/£8.50. Hand-peeled shrimp — 95 DKK/£11. This is what Danish food actually tastes like
  • Grød: Porridge (yes, porridge) elevated to an art form. Their risalamande (rice pudding, 55 DKK) in winter is extraordinary
  • Coffee Collective: Denmark's best roaster. Flat white 48 DKK/£5.50
  • SURT: Fermented foods — kimchi, hot sauces, and fermented vegetable sandwiches. Very New Nordic

Reffen (Copenhagen Street Food)

On Refshaleøen island — 40+ shipping container food stalls by the harbour. Bus 9A from the centre, or a 25-minute walk from Nyhavn.

  • Gasoline Grill: Possibly the best burger in Copenhagen (95 DKK/£11). The cheddar cheese burger is simple perfection
  • Jah Izakaya: Japanese street food — gyoza and karaage chicken (75-95 DKK)
  • Duck It: Duck everything — duck burgers, duck tacos, duck fries. Sounds gimmicky, tastes excellent

Budget €12-18 for a meal. Bring your own drinks (there's a Netto nearby — a Tuborg costs 12 DKK). The harbour sunset views are free.

Nørrebro: Baker's Paradise

  • Mirabelle (Guldbergsgade 29): The cardamom bun (35 DKK) that changed my understanding of what a pastry could be. Flaky, aromatic, slightly caramelised. Arrive before 10am — they sell out
  • Hart Bageri (Gammel Kongevej 109, Frederiksberg): Founded by a former Noma bread chef. Sourdough loaves, croissants and their famous cinnamon swirl (45 DKK). Queue on weekends
  • Andersen & Maillard (Nørrebrogade 62): Artisan bakery with exceptional rye bread (rugbrød) and the best kanelsnegle (cinnamon roll, 38 DKK) in the area

Smørrebrød: The Art of the Open Sandwich

Smørrebrød is Denmark's culinary art form — rye bread topped with elaborate, carefully arranged ingredients. It's a lunch tradition, not dinner.

  • Schønnemann (Hauser Plads 16, since 1877): The most traditional smørrebrød restaurant in Copenhagen. Curried herring, hand-peeled shrimp, roast beef with remoulade. 3 pieces + a Carlsberg snaps = 350 DKK/£40 for an unforgettable lunch. Book ahead
  • Aamanns (Øster Farimagsgade 10): Modern smørrebrød — seasonal ingredients, creative combinations. Lunch menu from 195 DKK/£22 for 2 pieces. More accessible than Schønnemann
  • Budget option: Any Irma supermarket sells pre-made smørrebrød (35-55 DKK) that's genuinely good. Eat on a bench in the Botanical Garden

Budget Eating Survival Guide

  • Frokosttilbud (lunch deals): Many restaurants offer 2-course lunch deals for 125-175 DKK — half their dinner prices. Always check
  • Hot dog stands: A ristet (grilled) hot dog from a pølsevogn (sausage wagon) is the classic Copenhagen street snack. 40-50 DKK with everything (remoulade, raw onions, pickles, fried onions). The stands at Nørreport and Rådhuspladsen are the most iconic
  • Shawarma: Nørrebro and Vesterbro have excellent Middle Eastern food. A shawarma wrap for 55-65 DKK is a full meal. Kiin Kiin Bao Bao (Nørrebrogade 98) does Thai street food buns from 45 DKK
  • Supermarket dinner: Irma (upmarket) or Netto (budget) — a good bottle of Danish beer (20-30 DKK), bread, cheese and smoked salmon (120 DKK total for two) enjoyed in a park is the most Copenhagen dinner possible

The Splurge List

If you're doing one blow-out meal:

  • Barr (Strandgade 93): By the Noma alumni. Nordic bar food — mussels, sausages, schnapps. Fun, social, excellent. 3 courses from 395 DKK/£45
  • Amass (Refshalevej 153): Another Noma alum (Matt Orlando). Sustainability-focused tasting menu in a warehouse with harbour views. 1,200 DKK/£135 for 8+ courses. Worth it
  • Geranium (Per Henrik Lings Allé 4): 3 Michelin stars. Tasting menu ~3,500 DKK/£395. The best restaurant in Scandinavia. Book months ahead if you're curious
